Everything you need to know about Stealth pop‑tops, roof height, installation times, B2B four‑hour fitting, roof bars, awnings, solar panels and conversion options.
If you’re considering a pop‑top roof for your VW Transporter, Ford Custom or campervan conversion, you’ll likely have the same questions we hear in the workshop every week. Below is a clear, practical guide to the most common queries about Stealth pop‑tops and the new B2B system, written to help you make an informed decision.
Does a pop‑top reduce headroom inside the van?
Hardly at all. With the roof down, you lose only a few millimetres at the very back of the van, tapering to zero by the B‑pillars. For everyday use, interior height feels unchanged.
How much height does a Stealth pop‑top add?
On a VW Transporter, with the B2, the increase is typically 27–30mm. On a Ford Transit Custom, it’s slightly more due to the original flat steel roof, the Stealth roof has a subtle curve to improve the van’s profile. In both cases, the finished look remains low‑profile and discreet. The B2B is slightly deeper than the B2, you can read about the differences on our recent blog.
Can you fit roof bars to a pop‑top roof?
Yes, but we treat them as cosmetic only. A Stealth roof can support a static load of around 40kg, but aerodynamic forces at speed are harder to quantify, so we don’t recommend carrying items directly on the pop‑top.
If you want to carry bikes, roof boxes or paddleboards on a VW Transporter, we supply brackets that mount to the factory roof‑rack points, bypassing the pop‑top entirely.
For the Ford Transit, we can add an additional fixing to the pop‑top for heavier loads, this must be specified when booking.
How long does a pop‑top installation take?
It depends on the roof system.
Standard Stealth Pop‑Top
A straightforward installation can be completed in a couple of days, but we usually ask to have the van for a full working week. This ensures clean workmanship, proper checks, and a high‑quality finish.
Stealth B2B Pop‑Top
The new B2B cassette‑based system is designed for speed and repeatability. Because the components are pre‑assembled, a full installation can be completed in around four hours, the fastest, most installer‑friendly roof we’ve ever produced.
Do you offer full campervan conversions?
Yes. Alongside pop‑tops, we offer full conversions including:
Everything is designed to complement the Stealth roof system.
Do you supply Stealth roofs to other conversion companies?
Yes, we supply to approved installers who have completed our training course. If you’re a converter looking to work with the Stealth system, contact the team.
Are there approved Stealth roof installers across the UK?
Yes. We have a network of approved installers listed on our website, and we also carry out installations at our Cheshire HQ.
Has the Stealth roof been crash‑tested?
Not yet. The Stealth system uses a one‑piece composite sub‑frame that replaces the strengthening bar between the B‑pillars. Our partners in Holland are currently putting the roofs through the relevant continental crash‑test requirements. These tests aren’t required in the UK, but we’ll publish results once available.
Do you supply a mattress for the pop‑top?
Yes, we manufacture a 30mm mattress that can remain in place when the roof is closed. It includes a removable cover and is available for both SWB and LWB models.
A thicker mattress is available for the B2B due to the deeper roof section.
Can you fit solar panels to a pop‑top roof?
Yes. We regularly install solar panels on Stealth roofs, get in touch to discuss the best setup for your van.
Can I fit an awning with a Stealth pop‑top?
Yes. We can install most awning rails (we recommend the Roof Lightning Leisure C‑Trim) as well as wind‑out awnings, all of which we keep in stock.
Can you replace an existing pop‑top with a Stealth roof?
Yes, we’ve carried out many roof swaps. It’s usually straightforward unless the existing roof has a composite front spoiler, which can leave visible damage when removed. We’d need to inspect the van to confirm what’s required. Additional costs may apply for removing the old system or replacing the cab headliner.
